Hospital stays and blood clots
One hazard of any hospital stay is venous thromboembolism — the formation of a blood clot in a vein. The immobility and stress of hospitalization conspire to make blood more likely to clot, as do old age, injury, cancer, obesity, and smoking. Most folks who are relatively healthy just need to get out of their hospital beds and walk around to prevent a blood clot from forming.
