Dear Reader, Strokes have always been a much-feared medical emergency, and rightly so. Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and even more important, a major cause of disability. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, amounting to 795,000 strokes and 129,000 deaths annually.
